Introduction:
Kay Celeste has lived in the Kansas City area since 1966. She moved here from Denver,
Colorado, after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education at Denver University. She
spent her childhood on a farm outside of Colorado Springs and it was in those early years she
developed a love for nature and animals. The outdoors is what nurtures her and brings her the
peace that can only be derived from being a part of the Great Creation.
She has been painting and drawing since the early 70’s, to help keep her sanity as a new mother!
Kay spent several years working with acrylics, but it wasn’t until about six years ago she
starting working seriously with graphite. Enrolled at Johnson County Community College in the
Commercial Art Program and taking lessons at Midwest School of Art, she developed an expertise
with graphite that has allowed her to create delicately shaded and contrasted work. “Segment”
drawings (which is a part of what is represented here) are pieces of a larger object. It allows
the viewer to see only a portion of a flower… or a shoe… or a face, which is sometimes much more
interesting than the subject as a whole.
Ms. Celeste also creates landscapes and still life in colored pencil, acrylic and pastels.
Portraits, both human and mammal are done in graphite and by commission. She has shown is
numerous shows; receiving a first place award in the Topeka Art Guild’s “Kansans Paint Kansas”,
with an acrylic painting of a Kansas hillside ablaze with wild flowers, and a second place award
at Blue Springs Art Fair for the graphite drawing of “Rosie”, a Plaza carriage horse. Other
exhibitions include Lawrence Holiday Art Fair and Art in the Park, Mid-Winter Art Fair (Ward
Parkway), Art Westport, Holly, Holly, Holly Fair and Images Art Gallery.
